The physical tests are conducted by our mattress testing facility in Frankfurt, and allow us to test all candidates for the top 5 best mattresses. These tests allow us to evaluate various quality criteria of a mattress independently of the tests performed by the manufacturers themselves, and are therefore more objective. The data we collect is then analyzed and forms the basis for our assessment of each mattress.

Sustainability

Durability is one of the most important aspects of mattress testing. This test consists of simulating the aging of a mattress over a period of time to determine its long-term firmness loss.

To do this, we use two different machines.

The rolling machine

This heavy roller rolls continuously for hours on the mattress to simulate the movement of our body during the night.

The Bench Test

Point Elasticity

The purpose of the point elasticity test for mattresses is to determine the ability to compress a small part of the mattress without affecting the surrounding surfaces. In other words, we see if it is possible for you to get up at night without waking up your partner. For this test, we use a special indentation machine.

The notching machine

To best perform this test, we use a notch machine that applies pressure to specific areas of the mattress. The less the areas around these compression points are affected, the higher the score on point elasticity of the mattress.

Zoning (lying zones)

The zoning test helps determine the number of zones in a mattress. A zone is a part of the mattress where the body will sink differently than adjacent parts. Generally, a mattress has between 3 and 7 zones.

The notching machine for zoning

To test the zoning of a mattress, we use a different type of indentation machine than the point elasticity test. This machine calculates how deeply the mattress indents at different points (zones).

The more zones a mattress has, the more it will conform to the shape of your body, which is very important for the level of comfort and support a mattress provides. Therefore, zoning is also an important criterion for determining the quality of a mattress.

Additional tests: washing and ease of use

Durability, point elasticity and zoning are the three criteria we paid the most attention to in our mattress test 2024. However, they are not the only criteria we paid attention to. In fact, during our tests we also consider two other criteria:
